FRIDAY: “Catching Waves”
Brecken’s hooping style is based on body movements that fall into each other and allow you to let go and be pulled by the hoop. On day one you’ll be “Catching Waves” through ramps and imagery, “Finding the Figure 8” to better understand those waves, falling into elegant spins, and adding extensions for a more dynamic, spinning effect.
2pm – 4pm Part 1 will be based on how to transition the hoop everywhere -and experience that transition like riding a wave. In this class, we start with a basic hoop move and then soften the move into “waves:” We’ll engage the space with our hoops; listen to our balance; listen to momentum; create ramps and ride them like roller coasters. Throughout the day we’ll begin to understand these waves better by exploring the figure 8 as a tool for direction change

4:30 – 6:30pm Next we’ll add some spins and extensions. By connecting with the ground, feeling the hoop’s rotation and waiting to be pulled by it, the hoop can become a great teacher and the move can become an experience. “Barrel rolls/spinning isolations,” and light tosses will be included in this class, as well as some shoulder duck-outs, shoulder transfers, and a new fancy shoulder maneuver i’ve been calling the “trap door.”

SATURDAY: “Floor Hooping”
This hooping class is based on safe, spiraling dance movements that use the hoop’s momentum to create a dynamic exchange. * This class is easier than you think!! * The hoop is still a great teacher, even while on the floor. So there is a lot of listening to do and the movements are very soft. You CAN do it, and it starts out very slow. Here, you’ll learn the tools to get started and how to make “floor hooping” a unique part of your own flow.
2pm – 4pm Hooping on the floor begins with finding roundness in our bodies. Curling slowly to each side, sitting up, laying down, rocking with the hoop like a coin, and gently getting up and down from the floor. Maybe also a little bit of spinning on our butts. This class is both relaxing and informative and will provide the structure for your floor hooping options.

4:30pm – 6:30pm Once we have our basic toolbox we can have some fun with it. We will start to change elevations, explore the floor and add our own hoop moves to it. This is where the floor starts to get really exciting and also where the concepts start to weave together so we can understand of how to use “floor hooping” in our own flow. Additionally, I’ll go over some of the extremely ambitious moves that you may want to try (or even just take notes and film of for later).

Facilitator – Brecken Rivara

Brecken Rivara is a hoop dance teacher based in the US, who has been hooping for just over 10 years. Known for her ragdoll fluidity, seamless transitions, warp-speed spinning, and her more recent developments in “floor hooping” and hoop notation, she has been a teacher to many worldwide and is still considered one of the most influential contributors to the form. “I never would have thought that something so basic could have changed my life like this. I picked it up for exercise and found the greatest movement teacher on Earth. It’s perfect in so many ways: scooping us into its vortex, bringing flight to our movements and informing a sense of softness. We can become its center and develop our inner spiral, or send it out and exchange with it’s force; all of this while learning from its curve and being comforted by the security it can provide. The hoop helps us find our superhero. It’s up to us to keep rediscovering it” Brecken is VERY grateful to be visiting us in Dubai and understands how extremely lucky she is to have the support of such a wonderful community of people. Thank you to Teeba for making this happen and to all of you for bringing the magic that the hoop brings out.

FANCY FAILS
Everyone drops the hoop! It’s part of learning, the creative process and an inevitable problem you will face when performing, whether it’s on a stage or just trying to show off some moves to friends after a few drinks!! This workshop will teach you how to pick up the hoop in ways that’ll make it seem like you dropped it on purpose. Easy starts, kick ups, springs, spins, wedgies and even a few more acrobatic variations! Turn your ‘fails’ into your best tricks!
ROLL WITH IT!

Learn all about how to nail your back and chest rolls and a ton of variations on them. We’ll cover fake rolls, rolls to and from the foot, half rolls and turning rolls 🙂
Wedgies for All
A whole workshop devoted to hoop tricks involving the Wedgie. Build the wedige into your flow with many ways going in and out of the wedgie, and all its variations. It’s addictive

TWINS! Change your perspective

Twin hooping can be a bit daunting. When using one hoop, hoopers are willing (and able) to sometimes ‘just dance’ and not worry about the tricks. Add a second hoop and the ability to just play/just dance is often lost. I want to prove it doesn’t have to be! Using some of my favourite twin hoop movements, we will explore ways to help you open up your creativity and fall in love/more in love with twin hooping.
YOU DON’T NEED TO BE A TWINS HOOPER to get loads from this workshop. All tricks will be taught with one hoop first and those that want the challenge can try with two. All exercises will be accessible and useful to the whole group, This workshop has been specifically put together to cater to all levels from beginner to advanced.
